World 800m Champion
30 July, 2011
Rebecca is now World Champion for the 800m Freestyle and in
doing so completed her international set, as she is already
Olympic, European and Commonwealth Games Champion.
In one of the most exciting races of the week, Rebbeca and the
defending champion Lotte Friis were never more than 0.5 seconds
apart. Rebecca was able to pull ahead during the last 50m, showing
great reserves at the end of a tough race.
Her initial reactions following the race were as follows.
"I'm so happy to have won a World Championship gold medal. The
last two Worlds didn't go right for me so I'm just really pleased
with this win."
"This is why I get up at five in the morning and makes it
all worth it. I couldn't ask for a better support team and I'm such
a lucky girl.
"It was such a tough race - Lotte is an amazing swimmer.
It felt a bit quicker than the heats going out so I wasn't sure I'd
have anything left going back.
"I just told myself I've got two weeks holiday after that
so I don't care if I'm aching - it will be worth it."
A full review of the championships will be added in the near
future, including thoughts on her Silver medal in the 400m
