Rebecca's Diary

13 February, 2013
I've been swimming in local pools since I can remember, and there's no doubt that without the access I had to these pools I would not have achieved what I have.

5 February, 2013
Today I am announcing the end of my competitive swimming career. I don't want to use the word 'retired' as I will never stop swimming. It’s my hobby, my love, and has always been my passion. I'm pretty sure I will still be swimming when I'm 80 years old!

5 February, 2013
I’m very lucky to have worked with some of the most incredible people throughout my career. I owe a lot to those people as I couldn't have done it without them. Swimming is an individual sport, but we are such a close –knit group and you need a team behind you to make you successful.

4 December, 2012
Yesterday I decided to speak out about the British Swimming Review. I did this as I care passionately about swimming and would love to see a positive change that would help the future of British Swimming.

15 October, 2012
What an amazing few weeks it's been! I finally managed to have a few weeks' holiday for the first time since the Games.

12 September, 2012
It's been a great experience for me to swap my swimsuit for padded shorts and take up cycling! I'm doing a charity bike in Africa on October 3rd for Sport In Action. The plan is to cycle 280 miles in four days in 40 degree heat, so it's going to be a challenge! But no doubt a good one. I've been doing my cycling training and starting to get the hang of it a bit more. I fell off quite a bit to begin with, but I'm gaining a little bit more confidence on the bike now.

Wow, what an incredible week! It's been very emotional, but amazing to look back on. I must say a HUGE thank you to absolutely everyone who has supported and helped me. The messages I've received have been so lovely.

30 July, 2012
I'm so happy to have won a bronze medal, especially in front of a home crowd!! It was such an amazing atmosphere. Thank you to everyone for your support leading up to this and for all your messages since. It's been overwhelming and everyone has been so supportive. It was incredible to even qualify and get the chance to compete at a home Games, let alone win a medal!

16 June, 2012
In the past few weeks I've had the pleasure of two trips to Spain...

30 May, 2012
A question I often get asked is do I ever get to see any of the Olympic events myself.

3 May, 2012
One of the major hurdles in the run up to the Games is done and dusted and I don’t mind admitting it’s a relief!! The small matter of qualifying!

Make my favourite recipe... Banana and Chocolate cake!

Here's my latest blog diary... click on the title above to read all about what I've been up to in September!

4 March, 2011
I've been swimming in local pools since I can remember and there's no doubt those pools helped me win two Olympic gold medals.

2 March, 2011
How fast is 2011 going?!
It's already March and the year is flying by - my first race at British trials for this year's World Championships is on March 5th and I can't wait.

9 December, 2010
What a fantastic country Australia is! I arrived here in November and for the first three weeks I was with my friend Katherine Wyld, and when we weren't training in the pool, we did all the touristy things which was great fun. We went to Australia Zoo which was incredible, saw all the kangaroos and koalas. I've never seen a koala up close and they are so cute, I want one for Christmas - well maybe the teddy version! I also got to feed the kangaroos which was really cool.

4 November, 2010
Just when I think the year can’t get any better…! I fly out to Australia on Thursday for some warm weather training with my teammate (and flat-mate) Katherine Wyld for six weeks.

8 October, 2010
What a brilliant day and the perfect way to finish my first Commonwealth Games! I was really pleased with my Gold in the 800m yesterday, I led the race from the beginning and managed to keep out at the front, although I did ease back to make sure I had enough left in the tank for today’s 400m race. After my seventh place in the European Championships this year, I’m over the moon to be taking home the gold.

21 September, 2010
I'm about to start packing my bags for Delhi. It's hard to believe this season started over a year ago and now I'm just a day away from joining my English friends heading to my first Commonwealth Games.

What a big week in Budapest! After swimming 55,000 metres in training the week prior I wasn't sure how I'd go against the best in the world at the European Championships

18 August, 2010
This weekend I'm heading up to Glasgow for my first public appearance with Cadbury, who I've been working with since the end of last year. Cadbury are the Official Treat Provider for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

3 August, 2010
I’m flying out to Budapest on Monday 9th August for the European Swimming Championships. I’ll be in action in my two usual events, the 400m and 800m Free, and I’ll also be doing the 4x200m Free Relay.

7 July, 2010
I’m off to Cyprus for a training camp on Wednesday with my team, Nova Centurion. I’m really looking forward to it as it will be great to get some outdoor long course training done.

5 July, 2010
I spent the most amazing day at Wimbledon for the Women’s Singles Final on Saturday. I’ve never been to the tennis before, and it was such a good experience. You get so close to the action and to see the speed and power of the shots live rather than on the TV was a real eye opener, they hit it so hard!

21 June, 2010
I'm obviously a bit disappointed to hear that the ASA Free Swim initiative has been scrapped by the government

9 June, 2010
I'm in Barcelona this week for the first leg of the 2010 Mare Nostrum meet - it's a long-course swimming competition that takes place in three European cities over the summer. I'll be competing in my favourite event, the 800m Freestyle, but also the 200m Butterfly.

8 June, 2010
The recent training camp in Mallorca was one of the best I’ve ever been on. There were about 35 swimmers plus staff and the atmosphere was so relaxed.

4 May, 2010
All of us in the England team, not just the swimmers, are aware of the situation in the region

7 April, 2010
What a week! I was pretty confident going into the British Gas Championships, but to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, the European Championships and take home three gold medals was more than I expected.

1 April, 2010
The British Gas Championships are just getting better and better for me.

30 March, 2010
I'm over the moon with the start I have made to the British Gas Championships.

19 March, 2010
I’m really looking forward to the British Gas Swimming Championships in Sheffield on March 29th – as it’s the first chance to qualify for the Commonwealth Games later in the year. Obviously the 800m and 400m are my main focus, but I’d also really like to qualify for the 4x200m relay, as I love the race.

17 March, 2010
It was my 21st birthday a few weeks ago and although it wasn’t a huge affair, I had a great day

24 February, 2010
As I work so hard in the pool and the gym, I’m always aware of picking up unwanted niggles and that’s where the physio comes in.

23 February, 2010
My family and I went to the opening of what was Sherwood Baths, now the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre in Mansfield, I can’t tell you how proud my parents were

I often get e-mails and letters from people regarding a swimming pool closing in their local community.

27 January, 2010
Although the result ended up being a bit one sided, the whole experience of the British Gas Duel in the Pool was awesome.

17 December, 2009
The BBC came to Nottingham to do a piece on the type of swimsuits we’ll all be wearing from January and filmed a bit of me swimming in the Speedo kneesuit I’ll be wearing at the Duel in the Pool this weekend in Manchester and throughout next year.

Following the news from the IOC meeting in Lausanne yesterday, it is great to hear that the swimming programme will not be changed for 2012, keeping the 800m Freestyle for women in the programme.

I’ve always loved dogs – my parents have had them since I was little, so when I moved out of home following the Beijing Games I knew I was missing something.

12 October, 2009
I’m currently doing a period of two months heavy training – so it’s pretty hardcore for me at the moment.

When I got back from Beijing I was inundated with requests from charities and other good causes. Unfortunately, given my on-going training regime over the next 3 years to 2012, its not physically possible to fulfil all of the requests.

Going into the recent World Championship Trials in Sheffield, I was relatively nervous given everything that has happened since the Olympics in Beijing. Whilst I had maintained a full training programme I hadn’t been able to train to the standard I usually do throughout the winter months.

Recently I was very concerned to read that the IOC/FINA are considering removing the 800m Freestyle from the Olympic Programme for women – as the defending Olympic Champion in the event I would be very sad if this does in fact come into effect for 2012...

Where to start with a year that contained so much....
My first major event of the year was the Olympic Trials. Without any doubt, the most emotionally draining domestic event I’ve ever experienced. Everywhere I looked I saw athletes crying, either because they had missed out on the GB Olympic Team, or through sheer elation and relief at making it.
